Is this order for dine in, take out or….delivery?

How many times have I encountered or heard of this scenario: “I’m craving McDons food!! But I’m too lazy to walk there… or I don’t have my licence… or I’m too drunk to drive there.”

As an occasional designated driver, I have found myself not only driving people home, but making mcdons runs on a few occasions. Actually, intoxicated individuals aren’t the only people whom I go to McDonalds for. More often would be for a former coworker, not mentioning any names here (*cough* arena rink attendant). In the first case, I would be driving, but in the second case I usually biked there (once during a snowstorm).

That is no longer necessary. A relatively new start-up called Fast Food Delivered delivers Wendy’s and McDonalds food “fast, fresh and hot/cold just as if you went to the restaurant yourself.” They also plan to expand service to cover other fast food restaurants such as Tim Hortons, A&W, Burger King, Harvey’s etc. The delivery fee is $5 to place an order online or via text message, and $7 for phone orders.

FFD looks promising, as Metro News has tested out their service and they delivered on-time, but the burgers were “more warm than hot”. Personally I cannot use their service currently, and this is the catch for everyone reading this in Dryden: Only serving postal codes beginning with K1J, K1K, K1L and K1M. The postal code for University of Ottawa is K1N, so not quite yet, but close.

Perhaps FFD will reduce the amount of CO2 emissions generated at Tim Hortons drive thrus, fuel consumption (for you anyways), and it’s also convenient for those whom are too busy to leave their office to get food (or too lazy to leave their home). On the downside, people will get even less physical activity from walking to the fast food restaurant of their choice (or even if it’s just walking to their vehicle to drive there), that’s what concerns me the most about this type of business.

Nonetheless, if you have coworkers and friends going on a food run then you’re all good, and having a friend who’ll bike a 3 km round trip in a snowstorm for “2 McDoubles, extra McChicken sauce and a large fries” with no delivery fee, well what can I say but “priceless”.

No Wi-Fi in residence? Connectify!

Wifi logo To this day, I still don’t understand why the entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled except for the residence units. I’m not saying that wired connections are bad, as they are generally faster than Wi-Fi connections, but some devices don’t have Ethernet ports to plug into a wired connection. Tablets (notably iPads), smartphones, iPods, etc. Also if you have two computers, or an Xbox 360 or some other device that is to be plugged in and you only have one Ethernet port, you’re screwed without a switch/router.

So there’s a few options here. You can camp out in the University Center or Engineering Building (SITE) with your device in order to access the Internet, you can fiddle around with Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP/Vista/7, or you can use a third-party software program to turn your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot, wherever you get Internet. This article will describe the third option.

I’d also like to point out that this can be done not only in residence, but at home, in hotel rooms, and wherever you plug your computer in to the Internet. Yes, it even works at work too, but please keep in mind your workplace Internet use policies.

What you will need:

  • A computer running Windows XP, Vista or 7 that has wireless networking capability
  • Connectify

Back in Ottawa …. Good old OC Transpo

Attended the first Ice Dogs game of the year, made my last snack bar transaction of the season, packed my suitcase (following the laws of physics this time), chilled with my best friend for a bit over an hour, got home at 0030, rode on a class C vehicle for 27 hours, got woken up by the bus operator telling me I arrived in Ottawa, took OC Transpo 101 to the Transitway then 95 to Campus, and here I am, back in an even quieter Ottawa.

Il y a de la neige par terre. After all, it’s January, and if there was still zero snow on the ground, something is seriously wrong with Earth’s climate.

Back in high school and elementary school, I found Christmas holidays to be rather boring and uneventful. Complete opposite this year. Despite exams being very “eventful”, it was a very nice three weeks off. In fact I tried to minimize downtime in Dryden….work, McDonalds, arena, friends, Tims, biking (yes I do bike in winter), can’t afford to lose any time. Of course that didn’t work too well, as I would crash between 0400 and 0500 if I didn’t have to work the next day and wake up at 1330, so much for minimizing downtime.

Memorable events while back in Northwestern Ontario include (not really in any particular order):

  • Eagles volleyball / basketball, both in Kenora and Dryden.
  • Ice Dogs games, three of them I got to see
  • Work! Being present in a workplace as an on duty employee has never felt so amazing before, even though I’ve loved my job the day I started.
  • Midget hockey. Yup, midgets playing hockey are quite amusing. LOL I mean, the midget division of the Dryden Minor Hockey League, ages 15-18. Many of my friends still play. Monday 2000-2100 Rink 1, Wednesday 1930-2030, 2030-2130 Rink 2, and Sunday 1530-1700.
  • Spending time with my mom, which wasn’t a lot of time :-/
  • Spending time with my best friend, and other friends whom are either still in secondary school or are in post-secondary education.
  • Designated driving for new years. At least all my passengers were well behaved this time.
All in all, a much needed break away from school, which ended a bit too soon :P
